Dr. Jamie Sands is honored to have been chosen to be a part of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation’s (AACDCF) Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program.  This program is designed to heal the effects of domestic and sexual violence. By providing free dental treatment to those who need to restore their smiles,  survivors are provided a way to restart their lives.  In addition, they are provided a variety of valuable resources to support all aspects of the victim’s physical and emotional recovery.

Give Back a Smile Patient This is the first time that Dr. Jamie Sands has participated in the GBAS program and she has been paired with Maria, a domestic abuse survivor.  As you can see from the photo on the left, Maria is a woman whose life and appearance has been marred by domestic violence – her missing front tooth is a daily reminder of the past she leaves behind. Dr. Sands will be teaming with her colleague, Dr. David Levine, to restore Maria’s beautiful smile with dental implants and a professional tooth whitening.

“I am honored to have been chosen to take part in the Give Back a Smile program. It is a privilege to help victims of domestic or sexual violence reclaim their smiles, their self-esteem and, ultimately, their lives,” says Dr. Sands.  She added, “It is a very tragic that over 5 million people are affected by domestic violence every year in the U.S. and there is clearly a need for a program like GBAS to help survivors rejuvenate their lives through the caring hands of a local dentist.”

Dr. Jamie Sands has already begun the process of whitening Maria’s teeth and coming up in our next post, she will tell us more about Maria’s treatment plan which includes two new dental implants.  Dr. Levine will be executing his part of the implant process in early April. Maria has a positive attitude and excited by the prospect of having a new, improved smile.

Read More About the AACDCF from their website: The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation’s (AACDCF) Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program provides dental care at no cost to adult survivors of domestic and sexual violence who have received traumatic dental injuries to their smile-zone as a result of abuse.  Participating dentists will donate their time and talents to restore or replace damaged teeth.

Bruises and scars fade, but broken teeth cannot repair themselves.  The GBAS program is the only nationwide program serving this unmet need.  We urge you to join us in what may be the most important program you will participate in during your dental career.
