Dr. Jamie Sands values her community and finds fulfillment in giving back to those in need. She regularly volunteers her time with MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) by providing her skills at its dental clinic. Her latest project, Give Back a Smile (in association with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation) helps the five million people affected by domestic violence each year. Dr. Jamie Sands’ goal is to help domestic violence survivors reclaim new smiles, their self-esteem, and their lives by providing them with her expertise and outstanding aesthetic dental work free of charge. It is her hope to help the community by helping the individual.
Maria is a mother of three and a survivor of domestic violence. According to domestic violence statistics, a woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds in the United States, and domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women. Every year, up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence. As a result of a domestic dispute, Maria lost a front and side tooth, which made it nearly impossible for her to find a job. Going in for a job interview is nerve wracking and stressful enough, and not having your front teeth can make it extremely difficult to have the determination to take that step in the competitive job market. With no financial support and the constant worry of someone judging her because of her toothless smile, life was hard for Maria and her children. She was referred to Dr. Sands by the Give Back A Smile (GBAS) project, and she received two implants that allowed her to smile with confidence and, in turn, be excited and motivated about finding a new job. Maria received her new smile in 2015. Because of Dr. Sands and the GBAS project, she was able to go into the workforce with confidence and land a job. Maria is now able to provide a safe and comfortable home for her children and give them the support they need to grow up with confidence.
